WE NEED BOOKS!

Many of Orange County’s low-income children are not receiving the early education that they need to succeed in school. Some experts believe that for America’s poorest children, the biggest obstacle to literacy is the scarcity of books and appropriate reading material in their homes. The NAEP 1998 Reading Report Card found that students with higher reading scores were more likely to report four types of reading materials in their homes –encyclopedias, magazines, newspapers, and at least 25 books.

ELP distributes thousands of new and gently used books every month to children being served by programs that promote literacy. And every month, we fall short of the need.

If you have children’s books to donate, please contact us, for we will happily take them.

If you want to support our efforts to place books in the hands of children with cash, your tax-deductible contribution can help us support our mission. Our collaboration with programs such as Reach Out and Read, Scholastic and First Book Marketplace allows us to purchase new books at substantially below retail value. Thus even a $50 donation can help us provide anywhere from 20-40 children with new books to call their own.

To contribute a cash donation, please make your check out to Early Literacy Program and mail it to:
